The instrumentation recalls the classical piano trio of European music history: a keyboard instrument, a string instrument, and a melodic voice. Yet instead of violin or clarinet, the saxophone takes center stage—bringing with it its distinctive tonal richness and expressive range. Alexandra Lehmler (saxophone), Apollonio Maiello (piano), and Jörg Brinkmann (violoncello) form a chamber music ensemble in which the clarity of written composition merges with the openness of improvisational sound.
Rooted in a shared sensitivity to structure, timbre, and interaction, the trio unfolds a multilayered musical dialogue. Apollonio Maiello’s harmonic refinement at the piano meets Brinkmann’s lyrical yet percussive cello playing and Lehmler’s richly colored, often vocal-like saxophone lines. The result is music that is both architecturally conscious and freely unfolding—situated between classical form and jazz-based spontaneity.
This trio is not merely a fusion of styles, but a finely woven interplay of tradition and contemporaneity, composition and improvisation. It pays homage to classical chamber music while simultaneously exploring the sonic and narrative possibilities of contemporary jazz language—with curiosity, depth, and a keen sense for the unexpected.
